Felt Pouches and Ornaments

I was inspired to get into felt-based crafting by a kit I saw at a bookstore in Seattle, WA called Klutz Stitch & Style Pouches Craft Kit.

The kit includes felt, needle and thread, zippers, buttons, and an instructional guide on how to make a variety of cute animal and bakery inspired designs. I started with two of the suggested beginning designs: a llama and a panda.

Each pouch design follows a similar series of steps:

1. Cut the felt for the pouch shape and details.

2. See the details to the pouch (such as the eyes, hair, nose, mouth, and cheeks of the llama).

3. Sew together the two pieces of the felt pouch, wrapping the thread back to front with each stitch, leaving room for the zipper and button.

4. Add zipper or button closure.

I love how my pouches from the kit turned out and was inspired to get more felt and thread colors to make my own pouch designs. I made my pouches as personal gifts and would sometimes at wrapped candy or other small gifts inside of them to complete the present.

After learning how to make these pouches, I thought felt would also be a great medium for ornaments. I had seen felt ornaments in gift shops in Portland, OR and really liked the style. I was inspired to model the ornaments I made after friends’ pets as an extra personal festive gift. Ornaments were made using felt and thread like the pouches as well as ribbon to hand the ornaments and beads for eyes.

I’m really happy with how all of my felt designs turned out, and all of the receivers of these gifts enjoyed them a lot too. I enjoy how versatile this medium is for making cute and fun final products.
