Six the Musical Inspired Ensembles for Women’s History Month

I am so excited to see the musical Six on SF Broadway which features a modern take on the six wives of Henry VIII, fashioning them as pop stars. Although I have only heard one song from the musical prior to seeing it (Ex-Wives), I am very enthusiastic about getting to hear the rest of the music and see the show. I was inspired to dress as a pop version of Anne Boleyn to attend the performance.

Along the way to putting together my final pop costume I had a lot of fun doing both a period Tudor costume with an elaborate dress for Anne Boleyn and the corresponding pop version. I put both of these versions together to Anne Boleyn’s part of the song Ex-Wives. My sleeves may be green but my lipstick’s red.

I’m that Boleyn girl.

I had so much fun putting together the Anne Boleyn montage that I put together a longer version with all six wives. Anne’s costumes were specifically crafted for this occasion, but the other queens’ costumes were more ad hoc compilations of pieces I had on hand that I felt like captured the vibe of each character. For instance, Catherine of Aragon has the most elaborate crown, Jane Seymour has a black and white color scheme, Anne of Cleaves is wearing Germain dirndl, and Katherine Howard has pink accessories and lipstick.

Six Queens in one with all of my spare costumes and accessories.

I am especially excited to enjoy Six as an homage to Women’s History Month (March) and the her-stories of the six queens. After seeing Six I can genuinely say that I loved the musical and totally recommend it to anyone and everyone! Some of my favorite songs included Ex-Wives (featured in the videos above), Don’t Lose Your Head (Anne Boleyn), Get Down (Anne of Cleves), and All You Wanna Do (Katherine Howard).
