Trying New Things: Railbikes Edition

Have you ever dreamed of viewing beautiful landscapes while recumbent biking on a railroad track next to a partner or friend? Well that dream can be a reality with railbikes! My partner and I tried out this activity in Sacramento through the River Fox train company.

The adventure starts by getting some instructions on how the railbikes work (be sure to arrive early as indicated on the website!). This is absolutely an activity for two people so be sure to book with a fellow adventurer. The seat on the right has the controls: basically the car can be mechanically powered, manually powered by biking, or some combination thereof at different levels. The controller also has breaks to ensure you don’t hit the car in front of you if there is a sudden stop. Basically, the person on the right is the one that’s good at managing the pace and the one of the left is the one that’s good at taking selfies; you can guess which one I am (spoiler alert: it’s the one that’s better at selfies).

This was about a 10 mile bike ride with a stop in the middle to turn the railbikes around. My partner is an avid biker and I’m more of a novice with bikes so we alternated between an easy and moderate pace with the help of the mechanical controls. The views were gorgeous while biking along on the railroad tracks. I took a bunch of photos and videos but be careful not to lose your phone! Another group on the tracks dropped their phone and were miraculously able to locate it on the way back.

If you live in Sacramento (or want to take a day trip up from the Bay Area), I highly recommend this experience! It was fun, challenging, and beautiful!
