My partner is very into movies and the Oscars so we’ve made a tradition of marathoning academy award nominees leading up to Oscar Night. After watching copious nominees, we celebrate with glamorous outfits and fancy appetizers for a just-the-two-of-us at home Oscar viewing party. This year, Judas and the Black Messiah, Promising Young Woman, and The Father all touched my soul (if you need a good cry, I recommend any of the three). We keep a tally of who gets the most accurate predictions for academy awards and this year the New York Times kicked both of our asses. My ensemble this year was inspired by a juxtaposition of Promising Young Woman and red carpet glam.

My makeup look for the evening was loosely based on Jaclyn Hill’s Old Hollywood Glam makeup tutorial but with a champagne/gold color on the lid instead of a bright white color. I also added a teal liner to my lower lash line to give the look a pop of color. My lip color of choice was, appropriately, So Marilyn by Charlotte Tilbury. My rainbow Promising Young Woman wig was from Amazon. I thought the colors of the wig were perfect but didn’t like the center part so I cut side bangs into the wig and used bobby pins to hold them in place for the final look. I accessorized with some nitrile gloves, a sparkly art deco headband, and a heart necklace to match the style from the movie. My red carpet ready floor length gown featured a deep V-neck look and rhinestone accents. I hope even classic red carpet fashion critic Joan Rivers would have approved of this beguiling look.

I also had a lot of fun with drinks and appetizers for our Oscar viewing party. Premade bright pink Cosmos were served in chalices from the Madonna Inn. Appetizers included fried halloumi cheese, baguette slices with ricotta, caramelized onions, cashews, and honey, hot movie theater buttered popcorn, and various cheeses and spreads.
Inexplicably, even though I knew I would be wearing a wig for the evening, I did a fancy hairstyle underneath my wig which consisted of rope braids connected in the back of my hair to form a crown. A tiny fake Oscar award completed the ambiance. I had a ton of fun crafting this look and enjoying the glamour of the academy awards from the comfort of my couch.
