Trying New Things: Jet Ski Edition

My first new adventure fully vaccinated: jet skiing! This activity does, however, lend itself well to social distancing. My partner and I rented from the Disney rental company in Clearlake and took turns driving the jet ski with one of us in front and the other behind. The controls are very simple. A green button for start (to turn the motor on), a red button to stop (this turns the motor off but a jet ski has no breaks, per se), and a throttle to increase speed.

The jet ski included a safety strap so that if you fall off, the jet ski will automatically shut off.

Jet skiing was so much fun! For the most part we had no trouble learning to control the jet ski but we did take one turn a little too sharp and ended up getting plunged into the cold lake. As a chubby explorer, I was a little worried about getting back on from the water but the jet ski is very well-designed for remounting. It has essentially a step in the back (a metal rod at the bottom of the jet ski) and a handle to hold onto while climbing back on. It was no easy task but very doable. We had a most marvelous time speeding through the water, keeping pace with flying birds overhead, splashing our way toward beautiful hills.

It was a very different experience being the driver vs the passenger but both were a great experience. Being in control of speed and direction was exhilarating, but gripping onto a partner while speeding along was also most delightful. The only down side of this experience was that it was rather expensive: ~$200 for a 2 hour experience on a weekend day (prices vary depending on season, day of the week, and length of experience but you’ll be spending at least $150+ for this experience). For the $200 price point you could have two Disneyland tickets, a super fancy meal, or a variety of other experiences: is it worth burning that $200 in two hours? I feel like for myself the jet ski experience was worth the price; it felt like a Disney ride and a day at the beach all in one (although the Disney rental company has no affiliation with Walt Disney). Overall, jet skiing was a great new experience and I totally recommend it if you’re ok with the price point!
