I had always wanted to try pole dancing but had been to shy to give it a shot until a friend went to an Inspiration Studios Class in Redwood City, CA taught by the talented Laura with me. Pole dancing is such a fun workout. As a chubby adventurer, I did tend to be a little slower and take a little more time to learn moves and tricks than my peers. But with time and patience I had a lot of fun and felt sexy doing it. For me pole wasn’t just about the twirling or climbing or other athletic components. It was about the artistic expression, the combination of dance and fitness. I especially loved the “Down and Dirty” series of classes that focused on learning a routine to a particular song.
Pole dancing is not easy, but it is a lot of fun. Class usually started with a yoga-centered work out which flowed into the routine/moves for the day and ended with some free style time to practice what we had learned that day. If you do decide to try pole post pandemic, I recommend leg warmers like the one I was wearing to protect your knees during floor work. I also recommend being patient and kind with yourself. Try your best, get feedback from the instructor to improve your form, be willing to fail and try again (and be safe while doing so like using a matt next to your pole if trying an advanced move). As you can see in the video, I definitely could not execute all of the moves perfectly but I always had fun with it and gave the routines a lot of personal flavor. Here’s to opportunities to try new things, hopefully coming soon in 2021!
*Note that these classes took place in pre-covid times and I sadly have not had the opportunity to keep up with this skill during shelter in place. I look forward to being able to take classes again in the future.
