Trying New Things: Snowboarding Edition

I tried snowboarding for the first time this year and despite being a non-athletically-inclined chubby female, I loved it! I had an amazing instructor, Zoe at Squaw, who made me feel really safe and comfortable to take my time learning the basics: how to strap in, walk with a board on one foot, turn, slide and top using heels or toes for control, and perhaps most importantly, falling without getting hurt. It’s natural to try to flail and catch yourself when you fall but while snowboarding, this is a big no no! If you allow yourself to fall gently and use your equipment (helmet, padding from ski clothes, etc), you will be totally fine. But if you panic and try to catch yourself, you are much more likely to injure a vulnerable joint like a wrist or an ankle.

Here’s to trying new things, especially outdoor activities during the pandemic. This is the beginning of my Chubby Exploits series, my take on trying new outdoor adventures as a big and beautiful female. Trying new things is hard, let alone as an overweight person. I want to give everyone confidence that with planning, care, and flexibility they can try many new things! My weight is related to pre-existing medical issues and I will not be discussing weight loss strategies or expectations. This blog is more of a hey, at least for now you are fat; make it work for you! Cheers to being big and beautiful and active!
